Suryanar Kovil (also called Suryanar Temple) is a Hindu temple dedicated to the deity Surya, the Sun God, located in the village of Suryanar Kovil near Kumbakonam in Thanjavur District, Tamil Nadu, India. The presiding deity is Suriyanar (Surya) along with his consorts Ushadevi and Pratyusha Devi. The temple also has separate shrines for the other eight planetary deities [citation:1][citation:3].
The present masonry structure was built during the reign of Kulottunga Choladeva (1060–1118 CE) in the 11th century, with later additions from the Vijayanagar period. Constructed in the Dravidian style of architecture, the temple has a five-tiered rajagopuram (gateway tower) and a granite wall enclosing all the shrines [citation:1][citation:9].
The Legend: As per Hindu legend, Sage Kalava was suffering from serious ailments including leprosy. He prayed to the Navagrahas (nine planet deities), who were pleased by his devotion and offered a cure. Brahma, the god of creation, was angered as he felt the planets had no powers to provide boons to humans. He cursed the nine planets to suffer from leprosy and sent them down to earth in Vellurukku Vanam, the white wild flower jungle. The planets prayed to Shiva to relieve them of the curse. Shiva appeared and said the place belonged to them and they would grace devotees worshipping them from there [citation:1][citation:9].
This is the only temple in Tamil Nadu where there are separate shrines for all nine planetary deities. It is also the only Navagraha temple where Shiva is not the presiding deity — Surya takes that role, making it structurally and spiritually unique [citation:1][citation:11].
The temple is located about 15 km from Kumbakonam, 2 km from Aduthurai, and 8 km from Thiruppanandal. It can be accessed by road through Aduthurai on the Kumbakonam–Mayiladuthurai road [citation:3][citation:9].
